Costa Rica Overland Adventure (Beginner level)

While you may have been to Costa Rica, this is an opportunity to see parts of the country that tourists rarely venture into. You will be driving Land Cruiser 150's (which we upfit with GMRS radios and Mud Terrain tires) on amazing back roads and trails, while each evening, enjoying some of the coolest luxury accommodations that Costa Rica has to offer. Some of the highlights of this itinerary include beaches, jungle trails, hanging bridges, exotic animals, a rafting trip, 2 nights at a safari lodge, and 2 nights in an amazing treehouse suite!

While we have arranged some special boutique luxury accommodations from beach resorts to remote jungle camps for the evenings, the days will be filled with the adventurous overlanding experiences you have come to expect from Four Points. We will navigate mud, rivers, and remote mountain roads that will provide great overland training opportunities and the chance to put that training to the test in real-time situations.

You may already be familiar with Costa Rica but the safe, politically stable, and friendly vibe coupled with some truly remote back-country opportunities brings Costa Rica to the top of our list for foriegn (tropical) overlanding destinations. It is a great way to combine an exotic warm weather vacation with some overland fun in an environment that is predictable and easily navigated culturally. We have lined up some great food and cultural stops along the way and I am excited to offer this as a Four Points Adventure beyond North America.

Description:

Arrival Day Feb 12th - The team will assemble from different parts of the globe, get transported to the hotel Buena Vista Chic, and start to get a feeling for the magic of Costa Rica. (If you get in early you can visit a very cool animal rescue center or go on a coffee tour.)

Tour Day 1 - We head out of town to visit the Poas volcano, and also get you accustomed to driving your Land Cruiser. We then head North to spend the night in an incredible tree house high up in the jungle canopy at the Maquenque Eco Resort.

Tour Day 2 - Today you have some choices, you can stay at the lodge and/or choose to join one of the local tours offered by the resort, or join us as we tackle some of the toughest obstacles of the trip in our quest North to the Nicaraguan border. You will get an in-depth look at some of the more technical aspects of overlanding. Near the border you will have a gourmet lunch put on by one of the local chefs, and then return to the Maquenque to spend the night in an incredible tree house high up in the jungle canopy at the Maquenque Eco Resort.

Tour Day 3 - Today we drive to the beautiful La Fortuna Volcano area. We can walk on a Hanging bridge, observe some truly one-of-a-kind Costa Rican animals, and spend the night with a view of the volcano from the famous Observatory Lodge.

Tour Day 4 - We are off to the Nicoya Peninsula, with it's beautiful beaches and tropical sunsets. Along the way we will tackle challenging roads with amazing views of the surrounding countryside, ultimately arriving at the Hotel Nammbu beach resort.

Tour Day 5 - Down the coast we go, crossing rivers, and get in some miles of sandy beach driving along the way. We'll have a nice lunch stop with our toes in the sand and waves lapping the beach. This night we'll stay at the lovely boutique hotel Vistas Las Islas with it's amazing infinity pool and view of the nearby islands.

Tour Day 6 - We get up, enojoy breakfast, and then it's off to catch the ferry to Puntarenas. The ferry ride is one of my favorites, and I've ridden on a lot of ferries! Once we drive our Land Cruisers off of the ferry and into Puntarenas, we'll drive up to the Macaw Lodge and enjoy the walking trails and bird watching that this lovely boutique resort has to offer.

Tour Day 7 - A truly awesome day of overlanding crossing back and forth along a river deep in the heart of the jungle. We finish this afternoon at the famous Rafiki Safari Lodge, and it's awesome "glamping" tents. Just wait until you see this place!

Tour Day 8 - The day starts with a river rafting tour through the jungle on a class 2-3 river. We then return to the resort to enjoy the peaceful views deep in the heart of the Costa Rican jungle.

Tour Day 9 - It's a Cloud Forest immersion today, as we drive up and over one of the highest passes in Costa Rica, passing through coffee plantations along the way, possibly stopping for a tour but definitely getting some coffee! Then down in to the capitol of San Jose. You will spend the night at The Gran Hotel Costa Rica, located in the heart of the historic district. This evening will be our final dinner with everyone together, a time to say farewell to new friends, and to look forward to more adventures together.

Departure Day - Feb 22nd - With nine days of beaches, jungles, volcanoes and rivers behind you, we dust off one last time and return home. After a hearty breakfast, we will help get you back to the airport and on your way home, tired but with memories to be cherished!
