PURA VIDA: COSTA RICA OVERLAND ADVENTURE 2027
Next year (2027) marks our third year running overland tours in Costa Rica, and I can honestly say we’ve nailed the "sweet spot." It’s the perfect blend of true off-road exploration, incredible activities, and enough downtime to actually relax and enjoy being on vacation.
When we ran our very first trip, it was an 8-day run focused on navigating back roads, tackling trail driving, and staying at boutique hotels along the route. For our next run, we extended it to 9 days to squeeze in a white-water rafting trip. While the rafting was a huge hit, packing that much into 9 days meant a fast-paced schedule with very little breather. It was a ton of fun... but ultimately a bit exhausting for everyone.
We took that feedback, went back to the drawing board, and perfected the itinerary for 2027.
The 11-Day Costa Rica Overland Itinerary
We’ve expanded the trip to 11 days. Adding those extra days completely changes the pace of the trip, giving us time to slow down and soak in the accommodations without feeling rushed.
Here’s why this updated pace works so well:
Early-Trip Downtime in the Jungle Treehouses: Early in the tour, we spend a full day at our jungle treehouse resort. You get time to kick back on your private deck, watch the wildlife, and settle into the "Pura Vida" mindset before hitting the trails hard.
Rafting + Relaxing at the Safari Lodge: Near the end of the trip, we take on a Class 2–3 white-water rafting run through the jungle. Instead of rushing off to the next destination right after, we head straight back to our safari-style resort for a peaceful afternoon relaxing by the pool and taking in the views.
High-End Comfort Meets True Backcountry Driving
I’m excited about this setup because it represents the highest end of what our overland tours offer.
During the day, you’re behind the wheel of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado — fitted with mud-terrain tires and GMRS radios – tackling mud, river crossings, volcanic tracks, and coastal beach runs. You get real-time overland training and the chance to test your driving skills across Costa Rica’s changing terrain.
Then, every evening, we pull into unique, high-end boutique properties. Whether it’s luxury treehouse suites high up in the canopy, beach resorts on the Nicoya Peninsula, or safari glamping tents deep in the jungle, you get a great meal, a comfortable bed, and time to unwind with the group.
