THE HANKOOK TIRE BLACK ROCK DESERT TOUR: RUGGED TRAILS, WILD RIGS, AND ADVENTURE

There's a reason the Black Rock Desert is considered one of the ultimate proving grounds for off-road vehicles and overland gear. Its vast, sun-baked playa can instantly transform into a tire-swallowing mire, its rocky canyon trails demand unrelenting durability, and its remote expanse offers the kind of cinematic backdrop that money simply can’t buy.
We recently hosted Hankook Tire on our Black Rock Desert Tour, a phenomenal multi-day overland expedition that perfectly captured everything we love about backcountry travel: historical tracks, entertaining chats around the campfire, wild wildlife encounters, and a brilliantly diverse crew of new friends.
But beyond the adventure, this trip was an example of how a harsh environment serves as the perfect arena for real-world product testing, automotive media shoots, and brand activations. Here is how the trek unfolded.
THE ULTIMATE RIG LINEUP: FROM CUSTOM SUBARUS TO HEAVY-DUTY CAMPERS
One of the highlights of this tour was the variety of vehicles tackling the terrain. Overlanding isn't about a single, cookie-cutter platform; it's about building a rig that matches your style of adventure. Our convoy featured a fascinating mix of vehicles:
The Global Forester: A 2003 Subaru Forester that was definitely not your average grocery-getter. Totally customized and having literally traveled the world, it proved that smart driving and a well-built setup can take a crossover places most people wouldn't believe.
The "Chinook-Nissan" Hybrid: A classic Chinook RV camper "box" creatively adapted to a modern Nissan truck chassis—the ultimate blend of vintage charm and modern reliability.
The Full-Size Heavyweight: A massive Ford F-350 super-duty carrying a premium SuperTramp camper on top, showcasing how luxury and heavy-duty capability can coexist on the trail.
The Classics: Rounding out the group were the reliable trail standards, including a Ford Bronco, a couple of highly capable Jeeps, and my personal Toyota FJ Cruiser.

REAL-WORLD 4x4 RECOVERY TRAINING ON THE BLACK ROCK DESERT PLAYA
You don't truly experience the Black Rock Desert without a little unscheduled vehicle recovery "training." The slick, wet silt lurking just beneath the playa's surface loves to catch drivers off guard. On this run, we managed two very different, highly educational vehicle recoveries.
RECOVERY 1: THE KINETIC PULL
The first was a textbook, low-stress scenario. A rig found a soft pocket of slippery playa silt and lost forward momentum. We deployed a high-quality kinetic recovery rope, allowing a support vehicle to use its own momentum to smoothly and safely snatch the stuck vehicle back onto solid ground.
RECOVERY 2: SIDEWAYS EMBANKMENT SLIDE
The second scenario was significantly more complex. A vehicle had slipped on an off-camber trail, threatening to slide and roll sideways down an embankment into a stream bed. This required precision rigging. We had to anchor the rear of the vehicle's frame to prevent a lateral roll, to "scooch" the rear wheels closer to the road, and then carefully winch the vehicle forward fully back onto the track.
Thanks to proper recovery gear, clear communication, and a good team to work with, both vehicles were extracted quickly, safely, and with zero damage to the rigs or the environment.
WILD HORSES, HOT SPRINGS, AND HIPCAMP LUXURIES
It wasn't all recoveries and technical driving. The Black Rock region treated our crew to incredible sights, including a large band of wild horses and a fast-moving group of Pronghorn antelope effortlessly sprinting across the basin. And, of course, no tour through this area is complete without a mandatory, soothing dip in one of the desert’s natural geothermal hot springs to wash away the trail fatigue.

What set this particular tour apart, however, was how we bracketed the journey. We started and ended the off-road portion of the trip at stunning, curated Hipcamp locations.
After days of eating dust on the trail, rolling into a beautiful, private camp featuring a fully equipped outdoor bathroom and a hot shower was an absolute game-changer. It proved that you can experience the rawest, most rugged terrain the West has to offer while still enjoying premium comfort at the end of the line.
